The Senate approved the project for to exchange tax information between Brazil and the United States. The issue had been aproved in the House of Representatives and the Committee on Foreign Relations (CRE) of the Senate.

The agreement was signed between the two countries in 2007, but it needed to be ratified by the Brazilian Congress. The cooperation will provide, among other things, a better supervision and investigation of crimes of money laundering and will increase the tax transparency of the two countries at a time of distrust generated by the international economic crisis.

The referendary of the matter, Senator Jorge Viana (PT-AC) said, in his opinion on the CRE, that the project protects the rights of the taxpayers and also the obedience to the Brazilian legislation. Due to be a legislative decree which has not been modified in the Senate, the matter goes to promulgation and publication in the Federal Senate.
